Starting a business in Osaka can be a rewarding experience. Contrary to the common perception that Japanese people prefer to only work with their people, I have found that they are open to building both professional and personal relationships with foreigners. They are genuinely interested in learning about different cultures and perspectives. To thrive in a nation known for its productivity, rich cultural history, and strict adherence to manners in both professional and personal spheres, foreigners should consider the following guidelines:

  • Acknowledge that we are guests in the country, and as such, we should abide by all its rules, whether they are explicitly stated or culturally implied.
  • Make an effort to learn the Japanese language. Just as in Japan, people expect foreigners to respect their culture through language, the same expectation exists in places like Singapore with English in business contexts.
  • Contribute positively to society. Utilize your skills and talents for the benefit of the local community.
  • While adapting to Japanese mannerisms can be challenging, it is important to show progress and learn from any genuine mistakes that result from poor observance of manners. The Japanese are patient and supportive as long as there is a genuine effort to adapt.
  • Coming from Singapore where digitalization is a priority, I personally find the prevalent use of paperwork in Japan cumbersome. However, it’s essential to adapt and accept these practices.

Please refer to the video produced by the Osaka Prefectural Government, part of their public relations effort to highlight Osaka as an attractive city for business.

“People are very warm and nice, you know, friendly. They know that I’m a foreigner, and trying to understand each other and respect each other.”
